Jason's Story

“Proactive, Dedicated & Visionary Leadership for Our Community”

Jason Powell’s character was formed early in life. At the age of five, Jason’s father died. As a child, he learned how to live by the values of hard work and commitment to his faith from his mother- a single mom and registered nurse who worked long hours to provide for Jason and his older sister Shannon.

Jason was blessed to become a Little Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program at the age of seven. Bill, his Big Brother, instilled a strong sense of self confidence in Jason- who had many academic, athletic, and extracurricular pursuits during his youth.

Jason attended Nashville’s public schools including Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet School until he was accepted on his academic merits to the prestigious Montgomery Bell Academy. Jason appreciated the MBA mission of Gentleman, Scholar, and Athlete.

Jason soon realized that the best way he could give back to his community for the many blessings he had received was through a life dedicated to public service. Before heading off to the University of Colorado, he interned in his Congressman’s office in Nashville and Washington D.C.

In college, Jason was elected as a representative to the nation’s largest student government and walked-on to the Colorado Buffaloes football team as an offensive lineman. He went on to earn a Master in Public Administration from Tennessee State University while substitute teaching in Nashville’s public schools.

Jason joined the 2004 Kerry-Edwards Presidential campaign because of his concern for the direction the country was headed. His work took him from the cornfields of Iowa to sunny Arizona and back to Tennessee. His journey ended in Columbus, Ohio where the election was decided. Jason was awakened by witnessing the disenfranchisement of hundreds of voters and resolved himself to fight for change.

Today Jason works for Big Brothers Big Sisters where he recruits mentors for children who have one or more parents incarcerated or who are simply in need of a positive role model. He is also a successful businessman in real estate who fights for affordable housing and is active in serving his community.

As a homeowner in North Nashville, Jason lives in the diverse neighborhood of Hope Gardens located on historic Jefferson Street. He organized his neighbors to take back their local park from drug dealers and returned it to a safe place for children to play.

As our State Representative, Jason will lead with a vision of opportunity for our communities, Nashville, and Tennessee. Jason’s leadership will enable our children to learn and grow, empower our hard working citizens and families to prosper and thrive, and allow our seniors to live with security and well-being.

Jason will lead and deliver for House District 58 with a bold voice. He is the visionary we need for this bustling district that includes Downtown, 12 South, Waverly-Belmont, Edgehill, Napier, Chestnut Hill, Berry Hill, East Nashville, Cleveland Park, Maxwell Heights, McFerrin Park, North Nashville, Fisk-Meharry, Jefferson Street, Germantown, Salemtown, Music Row, the Gulch, and many more thriving Nashville communities.

And this is why Nashvillians from all walks of life are joining the effort to elect Jason Powell as our State Representative: they sense something special, something exciting, and something inspiring in the humble beginnings, the proven character, and the bold leadership of this native son of Nashville.
